It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey (Book Review + Coastal Outfits)

The Book That Feels Like a Seaside Summer Romance Movie

Some books feel like a vacation.

And then there are books like It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey that feel like a whole summer identity crisis in the best possible way.

Set in the small fishing town of Westport, Washington, this story follows Piper Bellinger, a glamorous LA socialite who gets cut off financially after one too many reckless nights and is forced to move to her late father’s hometown with her sister, Hannah. Piper is completely out of place there.

The town is quiet, rugged, and full of people who see her as superficial and temporary, especially Brendan, a grumpy fishing captain who cannot understand why someone like Piper would willingly stay in a place like Westport. But somewhere between dockside mornings, dive bars, oversized sweaters, and late-night conversations, Piper slowly starts figuring out who she actually wants to be.

This book is funny, emotional, surprisingly cozy, and VERY much a summer romance escape. It has major Schitt’s Creek Alexis Rose energy, mixed with that dreamy Pacific Northwest coastal aesthetic that makes you want to move to a harbor town immediately. And honestly? The vibe of this book is half the reason people love it so much.

Piper Bellinger’s Coastal Summer Style

If I had to build Piper’s wardrobe for a summer in Westport, it would feel like “city girl trying to survive a fishing town”… but somehow still looking effortlessly cute while doing it.

Think:

  • chunky fisherman sweaters
  • relaxed denim
  • gold jewelry
  • oversized tote bags
  • cozy layers thrown over beach clothes
  • outfits that somehow work for both dockside coffee runs and late-night marina walks salty air, harbor sunsets, seafood shacks, and someone’s emotionally unavailable fisherman boyfriend waiting at the dock.

This aesthetic feels less “East Coast prep” and more Pacific Northwest coastal romance. If you want to skip ahead and shop the full list, you can find it on Amazon, here!

Outfit 1: Dockside Coffee Runs + Early Mornings

This is Piper slowly adjusting to small-town life. The mornings are cold, the marina smells like saltwater, and she’s trying very hard to convince everyone (including herself) that she can survive here.

Outfit vibe: (all linked on Amazon)

This is the outfit you wear when you swear you’re “not staying long”… but secretly start falling in love with the town anyway.

Outfit 2: Marina Nights + Slow Burn Tension

This is where the chemistry starts building. The conversations get longer. The looks linger a little too long. Suddenly every interaction feels charged for absolutely no reason at all.

Outfit vibe:

This is cozy, coastal, and slightly romantic without trying too hard.

Outfit 3: Bonfire Nights + Harbor Bars

One thing this book does really well is atmosphere.

You can practically picture: dock lights reflecting on the water, dive bars full of locals, oversized hoodies after midnight, cold ocean air in the middle of summer.

And this outfit feels exactly like that. It’s comfortable, effortless, and very “main character in a coastal romance.”

Is It Happened One Summer Worth Reading?

Honestly? Yes, especially if you love:

  • opposites attract romance
  • grumpy x sunshine dynamics
  • small coastal towns
  • cozy summer atmosphere
  • strong chemistry and tension
  • books that feel like a beach vacation

This isn’t necessarily a super deep literary romance, but it’s incredibly entertaining and easy to get swept up in.

People love this book for the atmosphere just as much as the romance itself, and it’s easy to see why. The fishing town setting, the marina vibes, and Piper’s growth throughout the story make it feel immersive in a way that a lot of contemporary romances don’t.

Also, excitingly, It Happened One Summer is officially getting a film adaptation starring Nina Dobrev and Tyler Hoechlin, which honestly feels very fitting for the energy of this story.
